I bought a 2012 insignia with high millage but had been serviced yearly so I wasn't too worried. Had a new alternator and EGR valve and had clearly been looked after. When I bought the car, my code reader showed no errors and I was told the service vehicle soon just meant it needed an oil change (I'm gullible and made a mistake, I know).
T14086 said: but the EGR's there for a reason, emissions. Basically the idea behind it is to reduce the average CO2 emissions per car of the Fiat Group, to comply with EU regs. It doesn't really serve a purpose in the car. It will open fully on the over-run though, acting a bit like a wastegate on a turbo.

Having a bit of a nightmare with my 2012 insignia. Ready to give it a good kicking. Car kept going into limp mode on a daily basis with a "service your vehicle" warning. My odb2 reader said "Exhaust gas recirculation flow excessive detected". Took it to a garage who said the egr valve was stuck open because it was so dirty. I would also advise you to remove and clean the pipe on the left in the picture, it has 3 x 10mm bolts holding it to the manifold at the top and 2 x 5/6mm allen key bolts at the base, the end which goes into the manifold will be jammed solid with carbon/soot, dont loose the O ring at the top or the metal gasket at the base.. i have never removed the valve itself, just cleaned this pipe.
Replace Intercooler pipe - elbow clip. Going to attempt to replace the intercooler pipe on my 2011 Insignia over the weekend. Looked at some videos at it seems fairly straight forward. However to preempt the job I would like some advise on how to reattach the bottom clip on the elbow.

On the 1.8vvt engine you have 2 area's where oil leaks are quite common--1/ the camshaft engine cover and the oil filter unit which is at the front/right hand side--on the cover the gasket may have moved when they removed the head--remove the coil pack and look down at the spark plugs and
